UK's Express newspaper promotes company in news story & advertorial, only pages apart
NEWS STORY? The Sunday Express published a two-page advertisement for solar energy company HomeSun. The problem was a few pages later, a supposed "news story" even hawks HomeSun's services, going so far to claim that families can save money and reduce their carbon footprint by switching to HomeSun. Screen shot detail above shows the beginning of the news story by Ronald Yeats. (Credit: The Express)

The UK Sunday Express seems to have crossed the line separating advertising and editorial with its August 15 coverage of solar power company HomeSun.  The Daily Express has a circulation of 745,000, according to the Mondo Times.

Roy Greenslade of The Guardian spotted that a few pages after a two-page advertisement for HomeSun,  The Express featured a very favorable article further promoting HomeSun.

Is it OK to wear sports fan gear if you're a sports reporter?

Arkansas radio reporter Renee Gork wore a Univ. of Florida Gators hat to an Aug. 14 press conference held by the Univ. of Arkansas Razorback's football coach Bobby Petrino.  After Petrino answered a question posed by Gork, he ended his response saying "And that will be the last question I answer with that hat on," Petrino said.

Journalist Fred Barnes wrote July 22 for the Wall Street Journal’s opinion page slamming liberal colleagues for disregarding the tenets of "traditional journalism" when corresponding on JournoList about the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

But, while criticizing the JournoList members for teaming up along party lines, it turns out he himself has violated journalism ethics by not disclosing a financial conflict of interest.  Barnes has accepted money from...Go to full story

Chicago Trib Calls Out HuffPo Blogger for Not Disclosing Relationship To Rev. Jesse Jackson
Tamara Holder, pictured here in this screenshot from a YouTube video, was called out for not disclosing her relationship to Rev. Jesse Jackson when blogging about Jackson's son.

Journalists should be careful to always disclose unavoidable conflicts of interest when reporting.  But does this principle apply to the blogosphere as well?

Chicago Tribune business writer Ameet Sachdev called out lawyer and Huffington Post blogger Tamara Holder for not disclosing in her June 9 Huffington Post blog her relationship to Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Holder had written a blog post for The Huffington Post June 9 titled...Go to full story

Does Howard Kurtz Continue To Not Disclose Conflicts of Interest?
Media Bistro and Media Matters wonder if it's OK for Howard Kurtz to take reporting from one of his jobs to the other. Kurtz writes for The Washington Post and hosts CNN's "Reliable Sources." (Credit: Detail from The Washington Post Web page).

Media Matters and Media Bistro continue to be concerned with Howard Kurtz's dual employment --at both The Washington Post and CNN. Kurtz, after being called out for not disclosing both of his jobs, admitted in a June 17, 2009 article by Washington Post’s public editor Andrew Alexander, that his lack of disclosure was “an oversight and won’t be repeated.”

Media Matters originally cited  a June 15, 2009, online chat in...Go to full story

New York Times Public Editor Tired of Anonymous Sources
Clark Hoyt, The New York Times public editor, wrote another column this month about the newspaper's sourcing issues.

Editor & Publisher wrote – in an unsigned editorial May 19, 2003 – that the New York Times is addicted to anonymous sources. Maybe it's true because the New York Times Public Editor Clark Hoyt can't seem to stop writing about it. April 17, Hoyt wrote yet another column on The New York Times’ overuse, misuse, and abuse of anonymous sources. His view is very clear. He wrote that the Times is “squandering” its readers trust by...Go to full story

The Society for Professional Journalists’ Ethics Committee wrote that it is “dismayed” that some New Jersey Gannett newspapers have a New Jersey Devils employee reporting on the team.

The New York Times reported April 18 that some Gannett newspapers in New Jersey have been publishing articles written by Eric Marin, who works for the Devils' Web site. Marin’s first article for the Gannett's Asbury Park Press appears to have been...Go to full story
