Move Over Balloon Boy, Remember Monster Pig Hoax? : Forced Perspective Photo Tricks on Flickr
STINKYJOURNALISM EXCLUSIVE: This new image is based on a scientific analysis done for StinkyJournalism by retired New York University physicist Dr. Richard Brandt. Brandt's analysis of the perspective geometry in the photo shows that the boy only appears to be directly behind the pig. He was actually about 5.5 feet further away, cuing the optical illusion that the boy is smaller than he is and the pig is huge in the foreground. This image illustrates how the forced perspective technique was used to create the infamous Monster Pig photo. See our Photo Gallery below that shows a collection of forced perspective trick photos from Flickr. (Credit: Robert Slawinski, StinkyJournalism)

Before the Colorado "Balloon Boy" hoax, there was the "Monster Pig" publicity stunt, which much like "Balloon Boy" involved the exploitation of a young boy and generated press attention around the world.

The 2007 photo distributed by the Associated Press (AP) featured an 11-year-old Alabama boy hunter holding a large handgun from behind--what only appeared to be--a wild 1051-pound beast. The image turned out to be fake, created...Go to full story

France and Great Britain Consider Labels for Airbrushed Photos

France and Great Britain Consider Labels for Airbrushed Photos
The UK Daily Mail ran the above "before and after" images of the 1960's fashion icon, Twiggy. The caption states: "Spot the difference: Twiggy in her Olay ad (L) looks a far cry from her more natural appearance on a trip to the supermarket (R.)

Legislators in Great Britain and France are out to protect reality -- or at least reality as portrayed in photographs.

Concerned that airbrushing alterations (often made with the software Photoshop) have gotten out of hand and that the practice is creating misleading expectations, both countries have proposals on the table that would require altered images to be labeled as such. The proposal in Great Britain, led by the Liberal Democrats, also aims to put a ban on...Go to full story

Dino A. Brugioni, Father of Fauxtography and Fake Photo Detection
Dino A. Brugioni's 1999 book, Photo Fakery, continues to lead the pack as the best on the topic of forensic photography and the history of doctored photo detection.

The father of exposing fake photos, Dino A. Brugioni, is not a blogger.

Amazon.com describes him as CIA's original "expert on photo fakery" who started their "National Photographic Interpretation Center."

In his book, "Photo Fakery: The History and Techniques of Photographic Deception and Manipulation," Brugioni writes about his involvement in the CIA and the techniques they used for debunking political photos around...Go to full story

Chinese Fauxtography Again? Memorial for Fallen Taiwan Soldiers Photoshopped

Chinese Fauxtography Again? Memorial for Fallen Taiwan Soldiers Photoshopped
CHINESE FAUXTOGRAPHY AGAIN? In traditional Chinese lettering, the memorial sign on the right states, "The Army of Republic of China, the Soldiers who died in Papua." So why are the symbols CHANGED in the exact image found on Sina.om.cn? See photo on left, detail.

You don’t have to know any Chinese, to notice that symbols are missing when comparing the two photos of a solemn WWII Taiwanese memorial ceremony shown above. What happened? The photo on right, a detail, was originally published in United Daily News (UDN). It shows a wooden memorial sign held during a ceremony, meant to commemorate Taiwanese soldiers who fought and died in Papua New Guinea during World War II. In traditional Chinese lettering, the sign states: “The...Go to full story

Be Like TIME Mag & Make You Own Tilt-Shift Effects Photos...Just don't call it photojournalism
IT'S REALLY ROME! IT ONLY LOOKS LIKE A SCENE FROM A TOY TRAIN SET-UP. The image above was created on the Tilt-Shift Maker web site and is found on its site. No need for expensive, specialized equipment. You can instantly transform your regular photos into tilt-shift miniatures with a simple three step process.

Here is a site, "Tilt-Shift Maker, Discover the World in Miniature" where you can upload your own photos and instantly transform them into tilt-shift effect images.

"Tilt-shift miniature faking" is defined in Wikipedia as "a process in which a photograph of a life-size location or object is manipulated so that it looks like a photograph of a miniature scale model. By distorting the focus of the photo, the artist simulates the shallow depth...Go to full story

TIME Mag's 'Tilt Shift ' photography continues to embody editorial bias

TIME Mag's 'Tilt Shift ' photography continues to embody editorial bias
GOP DOLL HOUSE OR REAL ROOM? The May 18th issue of TIME Magazine examines the decline of the Republican party. The caption states, "Hallowed Hall: A room at the Republican National Committee is a shrine to the GOP's glory days--an increasingly distant memory." What the caption does not say is mysterious reason why the GOP podium looks toy-like and insignificant. It's a special effect, called tilt-shift photography. TIME editors used this technique to illustrate their point that the GOP may be disappearing. However, such an interpretive illustration that distorts size should be distinguished from photojournalism in StinkyJournalism's view. We believe the caption should have disclosed the tilt-shift effect or used the word "illustration" to inform readers. NOTE: The above photo and caption are from TIME's May 18th print version.(Brooke Kraft, TIME/Corbis)

Titled, "Endangered Species," TIME magazine's May 18th issue centered on the possible downfall of the Republican party. A two-page spread in the main story features a photo of a GOP room with a toy-like podium. The caption in the print issue says, "Hallowed Hall: A room at the Republican National Committee is a shrine to the GOP's glory days--an increasingly distant memory."

Those unfamiliar with tilt-shift photography will not realize that the...Go to full story

Wash Post reveals Scientology's doctored image after ex-follower's Dec 1999 discovery

Wash Post reveals Scientology's doctored image after ex-follower's Dec 1999 discovery
Arnaldo Lerma magnifies the above photo of a December 28, 1999 Scientology event at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. He quickly discovers the image shows evidence of Photoshop "cloning." In the cloning technique, details in one area of a photo are copied and then repeatedly pasted in another area to fill space. In this photo above, the cloning was used to copy individuals (see woman right of red patch)and repeatedly paste them to expand the audience.

The Washington Post reports, January 2000, that a fake photo indicates that Scientology's big December 28, 1999 " millennial celebration of Scientology's first 50 years" apparently did not have the giant audience in attendance that they claimed.

Lloyd Grove writes that Scientology critic and former member, Arnaldo Lerma, discovered the panoramic color photo Scientology PR representatives made available to the press on their web site was a poorly doctored...Go to full story

UK Politician authorizes fake photo of himself...2 weeks after slamming BBC's fake contests
YOUR FAKERY IS NOT AS BAD AS MINE: When UK Culture Secretary James Purnell could not attend a photo shoot in 2007, he authorized the hospital to Photoshop an image of himself into the scene as if he were there. (See photo on left, where Purnell he is added on far right). The problem was he slammed the BBC two weeks earlier for faking phone-in contests. He pointed out that such fakery would compromise the public's trust.

The UK Telegraph reported in Sept. 2007 that "Culture Secretary James Purnell, who led the Government's attack on the BBC's rigged phone-in competitions" allowed a fake photo to be made of himself that was released to the press.

The Telegraph said, "Mr Purnell turned up too late for a photo-shoot to promote a new development at a Tameside hospital, so he told the organisers to doctor the picture with fellow MPs to look like he had been...Go to full story

More Fake Photos from Dartmouth U's Hany Farid
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? This doctored image from the 1989 cover of TV Guide places Oprah's head on top of Ann Margret's body.

It was August 1989, TV Guide published the above image of Oprah Winfrey featured as queen of daytime TV talk shows on its cover. The doctored photo composites an image of Oprah's head with Ann Margret's body.

The Oprah TV Guide cover is only one example from a very good and updated list of altered photo cases on Dartmouth professor, Hany Farid's web site, called "Photo Tampering Throughout History." Many faked images in the list were made with techniques...Go to full story

The PhotoshopDisasters Blog Is LOL Fun
LAST TIME ANYONE LOOKED SHE ONLY HAD TWO HANDS? A graphic designer--who must have been in too big a hurry--forgot to remove a "third hand" during Photoshop alterations. The extra appendage makes the usually elegant first lady of France looks creepy. Find this and more fun at the PhotoshopDisasters blog.

PhotoshopDisasters almost never fails to make me laugh out loud. Unwitting graphic designers who hurry too fast leave a trail of hilarious mistakes that one wonders how they could ever have been missed before publication.

Whether advertising or journalism, PhotoshopDisasters has a stream of sharp-eyed volunteers who send in the flawed layouts that appear in magazines, newspapers, or packaging.

Take the one above of the first lady of France. The...Go to full story
