Fauxtography Update
by We The Free 07/03/08
"France 2, dragging its feet, eventually produced 18 minutes of film.
(There is practically no such thing as "contempt of court" in such
circumstances in the French judicial system.) The showing of this
film made for an eerie moment at the trial, when the hitherto blasé
judges sat up and started watching with more attention, then took a
recess, after which they asked for all of France 2's footage. It
would prove to be the turning point in the proceeding...
"You could see Palestinians being carried on stretchers into ambulances, then
coming out again unharmed, all in a kind of carnival atmosphere, with kids
throwing stones and making faces at the camera, despite what was
supposed to be
a tense situation. The tape showed occasional gunshots, not continuous firing.
From the general horsing around captured on film by Abu Rahmeh, Mena
concluded
that the whole scene must have been staged."

Sunday, the Shaanxi provincial government released the long-awaited results of its investigation into "Tiger-Gate," officially confirming what's
been known for quite some time– that the widely publicized photos of
a rare south China tiger taken by a local farmer last autumn were, in
fact, fakes."

New China Daily report confirmed Stinky Journalism's February 21,2008
analysis of the impossibility of the leaf size in comparison to the tiger. We
wrote: Notice the size, scale and proportion of what are,
objectively, small leaves in relation to the creature composited into
this environment." The China Daily reports June 30, 2008: "Police
discovered that the 'trees' near the South China tiger in Zhou's
photograph were just 0.8 cm in diameter. And calculations showed the
'tiger' would have been only 27 cm long." Image source |

Photoshopping the Weather
by Capital Weather Gang 06/27/08
"It turns out that weather photos are often the victim of
"photoshopping" -- the term now popularly used to describe the manipulation of photos beyond mundane tweaks in color, contrast and
the like, often for the purpose of deception. One example that has circulated widely across the Internet since 2002 is the above picture, which purports to be a triple waterspout descending from the rainbands of
Hurricane Lili as it approached Louisiana in early October 1992." » more
"The good news is, this photo is only another fake that was making the rounds on the Internet recently."

12 Worst Photoshop Mistakes ever
by Oddee 06/26/08
The original photo obviously had second figure that was cut out. Note
the disembodied hand that remains from a botched photo-shop job. The
graphic artist hurried and forgot to remove the hand. Advertising is
not journalism, of course. However, reviewing photo tricks used in
print ads can help school our "eye" and thus, our ability to
recognized fauxtography in the news media.

REAL OR FAKE?
from NOVA Science Now 06/25/08
"Seeing is no longer believing in our modern digital world. Powerful
photo-manipulation software is available to anyone who seeks it. And
according to digital forensics expert Hany Farid, improved forging
technologies make it more important now than ever to look at
photographs with a discerning eye. We asked Farid to scrutinize
several photographs of NOVA scienceNOW host Neil deGrasse Tyson with
different celebrities and then determine which were forgeries that we
created. ..Try your hand at differentiating doctored from untouched
photos (acknowledging, of course, that Farid likely had a lot more
technology and experience at his disposal than you do)." » more

Labour candidate in fauxtography scandal

"In this photo Brian Kelly and his missus (click for full size) are
at the
Howick Historical Village - "A
living Museum from the 1840 to 1880 period" so presumably going after
the Winston First vote. Except they aren't. You don't need to look
too closely to realise this is a shoddy, pathetic photoshop job. Take
a look at his leg: Interesting that he manages to be both in front of
AND behind the bloke in the rather trashy brown shirt." » more

Investigation each year show some evidence of tampering, and about
five to 10 of those papers warrant a thorough investigation, says Ms.

Al-Durra Hoax Case: Wall Street Journal ethically reports on France2 malfeasance ..unlike the rest of MsM
by SnapShots 06/12/08
"It's hard to exaggerate the significance of Mohammed al-Durra, the 12-year-old Palestinian boy allegedly killed by Israeli bullets on
Sept. 30, 2000. The iconic image of the terrified child crouching
behind his father helped sway world opinion against the Jewish state
and fueled the last Intifada. It's equally hard, then, to exaggerate
the significance of last week's French court ruling that called the
story into doubt" » more

ABC News.com - How to Lie with Pictures
by Datamining
" ABC News has an article today...about pollution in American cities. The article is fronted with an image of Pittsburgh (on top of the list of polluted places) in all its smoggy glory. However, the image includes the Three Rivers Stadium. This stadium was demolished early in 2001. So why post an out of date image with this story?" » more
