Last Friday, New York attorneys Jack Litman and Richard Asche filed an amended complaint for their clients New Guinea Tribesmen Daniel Wemp and Isum Mandingo in the New York State Supreme Court.
Wemp was the main source and character in Jared Diamond's New Yorker article, "Vengeance is Ours," in which Diamond depicted Papua New Guinean Wemp and his co-plaintiff Isum Mandingo, as murderers. Previously, Wemp -- who claims that because of Diamond's story,...Go to full story

| David Remnick surely knows the old Soviet Union's adage pulled out in the face of evidence of wrong-doing...so why does he apply such backwater denials to obvious and demonstrable factual errors in Jared Diamond's New Yorker essay? See “Annals of Anthropology:Vengeance Is Ours: What can tribal societies tell us about our need to get even?” April 21, 2008 issue.

'17 killed,' '29 more killings': Jared Diamond 'stands by' New Yorker revenge story and gives the illusion of precision

| MURDER HE WROTE? Yours truly, Rhonda R. Shearer as depicted in Science magazine, alongside, former Papua New Guinea (PNG) World Wildlife Fund employee and indigenous person Daniel Wemp. Jared Diamond claims in his dramatic tale published by The New Yorker last year, that Wemp was a blood "thirsty" "killer" responsible for organizing "about 30 killings" during 1992-1995 -- an account for which Wemp served as his sole, unverified source.

This is #1 in a Series of StinkyJournalism.org blog posts that will respond to Jared Diamond’s and New Yorker’s exclusive statements to Science magazine, published May 15, 2009...
Judging by the quotations attributed to Jared Diamond in last week’s breakthrough news report in Science magazine, "'Vengeance' Bites Back At Jared Diamond," denial is not just a river in Egypt.

Science Magazine Reporter Scores Exclusive Interviews:

| Wins Jared Diamond and New Yorker Mag's First Response to Tribesmens' Lawsuit |

| Jared Diamond is shown here in a still from a National Geographic series, based upon his best-selling book, Guns Germs and Steel. Diamond wrote an "Annals of Anthropology" essay in the New Yorker last year that accuses Papua New Guinea tribesmen, Henep Isum of being a Ombal tribal leader who organized revenge killing from 1992-1995 in Papua New Guinea. The problem was none of this was true. He wasn't even an Ombal and he served his community as a village peace officer during 1992-1995. New Yorkers famed fact checkers provide no evidence of ever attempting to contact Mr. Mandingo before publication. Now he is suing in pursuit of an apology and retraction of what he calls "lies." Now the courts will decide.

Science Magazine reporter, Michael Balter, scored a coup. The Press has tried--and failed --since the April 20, 2009 filing of a libel lawsuit in New York State Court by Papua New Guinea tribesmen, to get interviews with Jared Diamond and The New Yorker Magazine.
The media sought comments regarding the libel allegations and StinkyJournalism.org's report on the numerous errors found in Diamond's New Yorker essay, April 21, 2008, about revenge killings where he...Go to full story
