NY Daily News Uses Stock Photo Child to Represent Psychotic, Obese Children Everywhere
The New York Daily News uses this stock photo of a shirtless boy (with no known mental disorders) to illustrate a story about children gaining weight on anti-psychotic drugs.

First the New York Daily News used a photograph of trash at the Bronx’s Hunts Point Market to illustrate a Florida woman’s death.  Now an unidentified redhead has become their poster-boy for an article about overweight, psychotic children. The boy in this Getty image stock photo is identified on the Getty website only as “Boy in pool locker room.” Unable to contact the boy himself, a parent, or the photographer, StinkyJournalism can conclude only...Go to full story

NY Daily News Uses Bronx Trash To Illustrate Florida Women's Death

NY Daily News Uses Bronx Trash To Illustrate Florida Women's Death
This New York Daily News photo misleads readers into thinking the trash at Hunts Point produce market in the Bronx is the 8-foot-tall pile of garbage found inside a deceased Florida woman's house.

What a pile of garbage.

“Woman found dead under 8 feet of trash in Florida home,” reads an October 8th, New York Daily News story.  Under the headline a towering mound of trash looms in an image readers would probably assume is the refuse mentioned in this tale of an elderly woman’s death. But if you read closely, the caption of the photo reveals that the image is not of the Florida woman’s trash at all, but rather “A heaping...Go to full story

Stinkyjournalism IDs iGoogle Gadget Grifter
Investigation leads to take-down of deceptive iGoogle gadgets that steal headline news traffic
by Matthew Nestel, Stinkyjournalism.org September 09, 2009   05:16 am EST
Stinkyjournalism IDs iGoogle Gadget Grifter
Above is an illustration showing an iGoogle profile of developer David Pascual whose hard work has somehow led to the hijacking of news organization trademarks to drive traffic to unrelated celebrity, sports, and health sites. Before the take-down resulting from StinkyJournalism's investigation, people were tricked by Pascual's gadget. They thought they were signing up for mainstream media brand headline news feeds on their iGoogle page--they weren't.

The faceless man above has been outed by StinkyJournalism. His name is David Pascual, and he is the person behind a ploy to exploit legitimate news content by tricking unwitting iGoogle members to sign up for news headlines directed to his sites instead of the legitimate news agency.

Pascual is the developer whose gadgets--such as Celeb-O-Matic.com--"borrow" legitimate newspaper and network names in order to misdirect traffic from these media...Go to full story

Hijacked! NYDailyNews.com headlines' traffic routed to fake sites through iGoogle Gadget
The New York Daily News headlines have been hijacked by rogue companies that use iGoogle Gadgets to reroute traffic from the real news company to their own bogus Web marketing sites.

New York Daily News editors and management should be screaming at Google: "We've been robbed! "

Unscrupulous companies are using iGoogle Gadgets to steer traffic to their deceptive Web sites. Just yesterday while attempting to add The New York Daily News headlines gadget by clicking the "Add Stuff" link in the upper-right corner of the main iGoogle page it rendered a list of four sites masquerading as the legitimate tabloid. Only one out of the...Go to full story

Is CNN & MSNBC Reporting or Making News About Micheal Jackson's Estate?

Is CNN & MSNBC Reporting or Making News About Micheal Jackson's Estate?
The King of Pop's death generates both news and speculation. StinkyJournalism asks: When news outlets headlines speculate, are they reporting or making news? (Photo Credit: Wikipedia)

With wall to wall news stories about pop legend, Michael Jackson's death, MSNBC and CNN news still feel the need to speculate what will happen in the future instead of just reporting the facts. One MSNBC headline states, (emphasis mine) "Jackson's merchandise sales could eclipse those of Presley or Monroe." Another says,"Settling Jackson's estate could be a thriller" speculating that there may be a fight with no evidence that one exists. The CNN News...Go to full story

John Barnes NOT 1955 Kidnap Victim: The Almost, Could be...but Isn't News Report

John Barnes NOT 1955 Kidnap Victim: The Almost, Could be...but Isn't News Report
Was John Barnes, the man on the right, also Steven Damman, the toddler on the left, who disappeared outside a Long Island NY store, in 1955? The NBC TODAY Show interviewed Barnes Thursday morning only to find out by early Thursday night that the FBI's DNA results proved Barnes was not the same person as the boy.

The facts were not in yet, but that didn't matter. AP launches the story on Tuesday, June 16, 2009. Television news was soon a' buzz. By Wednesday, ABCNews.com's headline was, "Finding Steven Damman? Family Waiting for DNA Confirmation." The New York Daily News headline blared on Thursday's front page : "Baby Face Picture that may tell 1955 kidnap story." The key word was "may."

The media went ahead, and without any real evidence,...Go to full story

Fatal! Racoon-Transmitted Infection!
NY Daily News Readers Accuse Paper of Spreading Panic Over Rare Disease
by Danielle Mastropiero, StinkyJournalism.org May 11, 2009
Fatal! Racoon-Transmitted Infection!
New York Daily News' readers wrote in droves to complain about the paper's sensationalism and errors in their recent report about a "raccoon ringworm" [sic]. The problem? First of all it is a roundworm--not a ringworm. Worse, the chances you or I would catch it are close to nil. (Photo Credit:Great Beyond, Creative Commons)

A recent article by the New York Daily News on a little-known disease spread by raccoons left some readers rabid over missing information. The May 3 story was about “Raccoon Ringworm,” however, the disease is actually called “Raccoon Roundworm.”  Ringworm is a common fungal infection while roundworm is a less common infestation by nematodes.  The Daily News eventually corrected their mistake but did not notify readers of this change. The...Go to full story

NY Daily News' Skin Cream Story:
More Infomercial Than Journalism
by Danielle Mastropiero, StinkyJournalism.com April 29, 2009
NY Daily News' Skin Cream Story:
New York Daily News reporter writes about tummy creme results.(Company founder, Karen Barke, pictured above). Problem was story was more press release puff than journalism...literally. One paragraph is lifted directly from product's web site without citation.

The New York Daily News' coverage of a new beauty product read more like a spam e-mail than a news story showcasing a very ugly example of what's passed off for journalism these days.

Nicole Lyn Pesce's "article" on Rodial's stomach tightening cream could easily have been written by the product's makers. She calls the cream is a "miracle serum," as well as a "phenomenon" and cites "rising demand across the globe" without...Go to full story

To NY Daily News...Tyra Banks' Next Top Model Riot Victims were "Hotties in Heels":
Now worried, 2nd 'round, producers are not treating "aspiring models" "seriously"
by Rhonda Roland Shearer, StinkyJournalism.org April 13, 2009
To NY Daily News...Tyra Banks' Next Top Model Riot Victims were "Hotties in Heels":
A terrifying riot broke out during last month's cattle call for America's Next Top Model contest. They reported six women were injured. So why did the Daily News use inappropriate labels, such as "sea of under-dressed women" and "hotties in heels;" for the victims of the incident; and then worry later that producers (not them) were not taking these "aspiring models" "seriously"?

All the women did last month was stand in line to enter Tyra Banks' America's Next Top Model contest. Panic broke out after a smoking car broke down, and someone yelled "gun." Hundreds fled, while trampling a reported "six" women in the melee.

StinkyJournalism thought it worth noting the various ways that The New York Daily News' report referred to women on the riot scene in March (aka, Women's History Month). Their more recent reports...Go to full story

NY Daily News Reporter leaves out real purpose of Court Appearence because it's not News
by Danielle Mastropiero, StinkyJournalism.org March 27, 2009
NY Daily News Reporter leaves out real purpose of Court Appearence because it's not News
Convicted murderer Darryl Littlejohn, got news coverage for complaining that others threatened to poison his food in prison. However, the papers never mentioned that the Court appearence was primarily about a Sixth Amendment issue-- not his fear of food poisoning.

When StinkyJournalism contacted attorney Joyce David for clarification of quotes she gave the New York Daily News and the New York Post she informed us that the media was missing far more than a few of her quotes: they were missing the point.

Both the Daily News and the Post covered a story on David’s client, convicted murderer Darryl Littlejohn, who complained others threatened to poison his food in prison. However, the papers never mentioned that...Go to full story
